Proposal for a regulation regarding temporary importation of seven products from Moldova
The European Commission proposed a regulation on 9 June 2022 to allow for “temporary improved market access for the remaining seven products from Moldova which are still subject to tariff rate quotas when entering the EU.” The seven products are plums, table grapes, apples, tomatoes, garlic, cherries, and grape juice. The regulation serves as an expression of solidarity with Moldova following Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which has subsequently eliminated the main Moldovan markets for selling agricultural goods. Most Moldovan products are already permissible to enter the EU tariff-free under the EU-Moldova Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA). However, this proposed regulation includes the products that are not within the scope of the DCFTA agreement. If adopted by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, the regulation will be in place for one year as from the day following its publication in the Official Journal of the EU, allowing Moldovan goods worth up to €55 million to enter the EU tariff-free.
