Food Safety : Labelling of Origins of Agricultural and Food Products
On 4 June 2018, the European Parliament (EP) Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRI) in association with the EP Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) organized a public hearing entitled “Labelling of Origin for Agricultural and Food Products”. The participants in the hearing discussed the implementation of national labelling schemes, drawn from the experiences from Italy, Finland, and France. They also discussed whether the European Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/775 of 28 May 2018 which lays down rules for the application of Article 26(3) of Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 of the European Parliament and of the Council on the provision of food information to consumers, as regards the rules for indicating the country of origin or place of provenance of the primary ingredient of a food, published on 29 May 2018 in the European Union Official Journal, suffices in meeting the high consumer demands regarding transparency throughout the food supply chain, particularly through origin labelling of meat and milk. Some consumer associations currently complain over labels being too ambiguous and confusing, not highlighting the information they want to know such as country of farming and processing.
