Commission’s registration of the initiative regarding a tobacco-free environment
On 24 August 2022, the European Commission adopted Implementing Decision (EU) 2022/1430, officially registering a European Citizens’ initiative called “Call to achieve a tobacco-free environment and the first European tobacco-free generation by 2030”.
The right of citizens to create these initiatives stems from the right of petition enshrined in Article 11 of the Treaty on the European Union. According to this Article, should at least one million citizens of Member States request it, the European Commission can propose a legal act to implement the citizens’ desired procedures.
Decision (EU) 2022/1430 publishes the initiative on the European Union’s website called “European Citizens’ Initiative”.
“Call to achieve a tobacco-free environment and the first European tobacco-free generation by 2030” seeks legislation that promotes tobacco-free living and outdoor locations, as well as little to no advertising for any related products.
Through the adoption of The Commission adopted Implementing Decision (EU) 2022/1430 the Commission recognizes that these objectives are not covered by existing legislation and officially registers the “Protect the EU’s Rural Heritage, Food Security and Supply” Petition to allow itself to propose further legislation that will cover the aforementioned objectives.
