Registration of the initiative “Protect the EU’s Rural Heritage, Food Security and Supply”
On 7 September 2022, the European Commission adopted Implementing Decision (EU) 2022/1513, officially registering a European Citizens’ initiative called “Protect the EU’s Rural Heritage, Food Security and Supply”.
The right of citizens to create these initiatives stems from the right of petition enshrined in Article 11 of the Treaty on the European Union. According to this Article, should at least one million citizens of Member States request it, the European Commission can propose a legal act to implement the citizens’ desired procedures.
The creators of this initiative, Česlovas Tallat-Kelpša and Markus Valdemar Sjöholm, seek to protect the lifestyle and practices of some regional communities for future generations by modernizing the EU’s rural commitments. The “Protect the EU’s Rural Heritage, Food Security and Supply” initiative calls on the Commission to promote environmentally sustainable production of rural output and higher standards of living in new legislation. Through the adoption of Decision (EU) 2022/1513, the Commission recognizes that these objectives are not covered by existing legislation and officially registers the “Protect the EU’s Rural Heritage, Food Security and Supply” Petition in order to allow itself to propose further legislation that will cover the aforementioned objectives.
